Dates: TBD based on lottery. Available arrival dates are between June 8, 2012 and August 14, 2012
RSVP deadline: November 15, 8:30 p.m.
Length: Either 7 days & nights or 12 days & nights depending on lottery.
Cost: Approximately $1300 for 12 day trek and approximately $1000 for 7 day trek, depending on mode of transportation. A $100 non-refundable deposit is required if Troop 62 receives a reservation in the lottery.
Age requirements: 2012 Philmont participants must be 14 years of age OR completed 8th Grade and be at least 13 years of age prior to participation.
Crew requirements: Philmont crews can contain between 7 to 12 members, and each crew must have at least two qualified adult advisors one of whom must be 21 years of age or older. The second advisor must be at least 18 years of age. Each crew is required to have a majority of youth participants and no more than four (4) adult advisors over 21. Depending on interest, Troop 62 can submit requests for multiple crews to attend in 2012.
THE PHILMONT TREK EXPERIENCE
A Philmont trek is physically, mentally and emotionally demanding. Each participant must be able to carry a 35 to 50 lb.
pack (but no more than 25-30% of their body weight) while hiking 5 to 12 miles per day in an isolated mountain wilderness,
ranging from 6,500 to 12,500 feet in elevation. Climatic conditions include temperatures from 30 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit,
low humidity (10-30%) and frequent, sometimes severe, afternoon thunderstorms. Activities include horseback riding, rock
climbing and rappelling, challenge events, pole climbing, black powder shooting, 12 gauge trap shooting, .30-06 shooting,
trail building, mountain biking and other activities that may have potential for injury.
