Winter Camp Out Sign Up - Snow Base or OKPIK

We have lined up three excellent winter camping options for the troop.  Believe it or not, winter will be coming soon enough and we need to get registrations in by September 24th to lock in our spots.  Once again, great opportunity for adults as well.

SUMMARY (See below for details)

OPTION 1: Snow Huskies (Feb 7-9, $65).  For new scouts, an exciting entry into winter camping.

OPTION 2: Snow Base – Dog Sledding (Feb 7-9, $195).  For middle scouts, stepping it up and adding in dog sledding.

OPTION 3: Okpik Dog Musher Camp (Feb 28-Mar 3, $438*).  For older scouts, a true high-adventure experience.

OPTION 1:  Snow Huskies

Location: Tomahawk Scout Reservation, Wisconsin (2.5 hours from Edina)

Description: Snow Huskies is an introductory program designed to teach younger Scouts how to stay warm in the winter while having fun. Winter Camping is an important part of Scouting, especially if you live in Minnesota or Wisconsin.  Troops and Crews should be camping every month, but that can be hard in those cold winter months.  Having the right gear can be expensive.  It is hard to find someone who knows how to winter camp.  At Snow Base we provide all the gear that you typically have to buy yourself, and we have trained staff to guide you through your winter adventure.  Your guide will show you how to stay warm, build winter shelters, and experience winter to the fullest.

Activities Available: Cross Country Skiing, Snow Shoeing, Broomball, Winter Nature Hike, Human Foosball, Team Building Games, Orienteering, Winter Cooking, Parachute Shelter.  Read more online.

Sleeping Outside: None

Age: 6th grade or older (11+)

OPTION 3: OKPIK DOG MUSHER CAMP (Adult Leader: Steve Lowe)

We have reserved space for up to 2 crews to attend the Northern Tier High Adventure dogsledding program at the end of February.  Northern Tier – just outside of Ely, MN - is home to the OKPIK Cold-Weather program, the BSA's premier winter high adventure program.

Description:  The Okpik Musher Camp  provides participants with an introduction to dog sledding. Crews spend their entire weekend with the dogs: going on runs of up to 10 miles every morning and afternoon, providing other Okpik participants with rides, feeding the dogs breakfast and dinner and sleeping in a heated cabin directly adjacent to the dog yard. Crews may also choose to add ice fishing and other winter activities to their trek. Minimum trip length: 3 nights. Minimum age is 14 by the time of arrival at base. Maximum group size 7 and minimum group size is 6. Participants will receive the OKPIK Musher Camp Award. See link for more information.

When: February 28 – March 3, 2014.  NOTE: scouts going will have to miss at least parts of two school days.  The program has a three night minimum, so we would stay FridaySaturday and Sunday nights.   The camp is about a 5 hour drive in good weather, so we would likely depart mid to late morning on Friday.

Scout and Crew Criteria:   Scouts must be at least 14 years old by the date of arrival.  We have reserved space for two crews of seven.  Each crew must have two adults, so there is room for 10 scouts and 4 adults.  Wilderness First Aid training is required for one adult per crew.

*Cost: The cost is $438 per participant with seven crew members. If only 6 go, the cost is $511.

Requirements:  All participants, adult and youth, must bring a completed BSA Health and Medical Record signed by a medical doctor.  Participants are required to fall within the minimum and maximum height/weight requirement on the Health and Medical Record.  Those falling  below 100 pounds or above 250 pounds will not be permitted to participate.  Link to full requirements

DEADLINESIGN UP REQUIRED MIDNIGHT TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24. DEPOSIT OF $115 PER PERSON required by meeting on Sep 30.  The deposits are non-refundable.
